What Is ICDL?
What Is ICDL?
ICDL stands for International Computer Driving Licence.
It is a globally recognised digital skills qualification that certifies you can use computers, software and online tools to a verified professional standard.
ICDL is accepted by employers in over 125 countries — including major UK organisations such as the NHS, Siemens, Nestlé, DHL and HSBC.
What Was ECDL? Is It the Same as ICDL?
Yes — ICDL and ECDL are exactly the same qualification.
ECDL stood for European Computer Driving Licence and was the name used across the UK and Europe from the 1990s.
In 2013 it was rebranded to ICDL to reflect its global reach beyond Europe.
The syllabus, modules and certification are identical. If a UK employer asks for ECDL, ICDL is what they mean.
What Levels Does ICDL Have?
ICDL is split into three levels.
Level 1 — Essential Skills covers the basics of using a computer, staying safe online and creating documents.
Level 2 — Core Applications covers spreadsheets, presentations and databases at a standard workplace level.
Level 3 — Advanced takes you to expert level in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Databases — covering macros, pivot tables, mail merge and relational database design.
What Modules Are in ICDL?
ICDL covers eleven modules across all three levels.
- Computer Essentials
- IT Security
- Online Essentials
- Word Processing

You can take individual modules or complete full levels depending on your goals.
